All Killer, No Filler - Interview with Long Island's "The Fearless"

[caption id="attachment_4084" align="alignnone" width="1125"]The Fearless The Fearless[/caption] The Fearless are a pop-punk rock band from North Massapequa, New York. They formed around six years ago when brothers, Frank Joseph and Paul Sparacino, met up with drummer Matt Maloney by accident during one of their studio sessions. After jamming together and feeling it out, they are now inseparable. The band presents a full spectrum of different types of rock music ranging from classic rock to pop to other tunes that make you want to get up and dance. With Paul as the lead singer and bass player, brother Frank on lead guitar and backing vocals and Matt Maloney supplying the rhythm with his background vocals and stellar drum playing, this band is truly well rounded. They know what they want to sound like and where they want to go. Previously signed to Vindicated Records, The Fearless are currently on a country-wide tour looking for a new label to call home. With the release of their full length LP “Gyrator” coming soon, they are sure to find a new residence quick enough. Self described as “Black Sabbath meets The Beegees, meets CBGB’s, meets a Studio 54 after party” this fun loving band is full of talent and crazy ideas. With fun loving tunes like “Tangled” and “Audible Eyes”, full of catchy guitar riffs and dipping melodies, The Fearless are slowly catching the attention of fans everywhere. Hailing from Queens, a city that has produced bands like “The Ramones” and growing up Long Island, which has produced bands such as “Taking Back Sunday”, The Fearless look to be the next ones to strike stardom in a long line of pop-punk successes. They have the sound, the lyrics, the right attitude and the talent to take their craft to the next level. So come dance along and catch them this Saturday, February 2nd, when they perform at The Bitter End in NYC. Don’t be a square. Read the interview after the jump. The Fearless Frank Joseph (Guitar/Vocals) - I grew up in Queens and later moved out to Farmingdale, Long Island. Matt Maloney (Drums/Vocals) - I grew up in Chappaqua, New York, moved around a bit and then came back to New York and lived in Wantagh since about 8th grade. Jason When did you guys begin playing instruments? The Fearless Frank - I started playing in 9th grade. I picked up the guitar and bass and started to sing. I played guitar for a while, then switched back to bass and vice versa. I pretty much played everything except drums. Matt- I started playing drums about 15 years ago. I’ve been playing with Frank and Paul for about six years. I do some background vocals here and there as well. [caption id="attachment_4080" align="alignnone" width="750"]The Fearless The Fearless[/caption] Jason What kind of music did you guys grow up on? Does it influence you in any way now? The Fearless Matt- I grew up on classic rock. My brother got me into it when I was young. I listened to a lot of Rush and music like that. I’m pretty sure every drummer listens to a lot of Rush because of Neal Peart. Besides that, I listened to a lot of Zeppelin, The Police. Pretty much any band with a great percussionist is what I listened to. I like a lot of different types of music. Frank- Pretty much all of my siblings were obsessed with Kiss, so that’s what I have been listening to since I was like three. I listened to a little bit of everything though. Jason That’s cool. So how did you guys meet? The Fearless Me and my brother were in a band called “Let’s Just Swing”, which kind of morphed into “The Fearless”. Our drummer then left and we found Matt playing in a Pearl Jam tribute band. We were rehearsing in the studio and Matt came down to hang out with us. We started jamming and after a while, we thought he was a nice fit. We went back and forth for a while about whether or not to make him part of the band. We decided to have a rehearsal and after that it was a done deal. [caption id="attachment_4085" align="alignnone" width="720"]The Fearless The Fearless[/caption] Jason So are you guys currently signed to a record label? The Fearless Our upcoming album “Gyrator” was recorded with Vindicated Records, so it will be coming out on that imprint. However, our contract expired, so we are currently seeking a new deal. So we were signed, now we’re looking for a new home. The record is still coming though, so no worries there. We’re going to just get on tour and hopefully by the end of the year, we’ll have a deal put together. Jason How would you describe your bands’ sound? The Fearless I said the quote a bunch of times, but I’ll say it again because I think it really describes us. “If Black Sabbath met The Beegees, and then went to CBGB’s, then went to a Studio 54 after party and had an orgy, you would spew out The Fearless.” [caption id="attachment_4083" align="alignnone" width="720"]The Fearless The Fearless[/caption] Jason That’s definitely a great way to describe the band. What kind of material has you guys put out already? The Fearless We put out a bunch of EP’s. We also put out our first LP, which we recorded and produced in our own studio. All of the EP’s are out on Vindicated and some of those songs will be on the new album “Gyrator”. The other half of the record is material no one has heard before. The new album is kind of a compilation of what we have been doing for the last couple of years. It works really well together. I feel like we have to kind of get all of the old material out for everyone to listen to. Jason Is there a date set for the release? The Fearless We’re pulling for Spring time, like late May hopefully. But there are still things we have to touch up. We might even add another song we had from a little while back to round it out to 10 songs. So, I want to say late May, but don’t hold me to it. Ya know, we’re still dealing with the transition from Vindicated, so there’s a lot to figure out. We just want it to be a perfect, kick ass, all killer no filler record. Jason True enough. What kind of material will be on the album? I liked your older songs such as “Tangled” and “Audible Eyes”. The Fearless I’d say there a couple of throwbacks on there that are heavy rock influenced, but for the most part it’s a pretty seamless record. It’s all pretty much based around the time we were coming up with material like “Tangled”. I think we hit all points and all types of genres thoughout. It’s a danceable record. It’s something you can move to. There’s nothing on there that’s just, “ehh”. That’s why it takes so long. I want it to be perfect. Jason So how do you guys handle the songwriting responsibilities? The Fearless Frank - Paul and I pretty much write the lyrics, but everyone contributes a word or sentence here or there. It’s really more of a collaboration than it is one mans job. Paul would be the one though to bring in a whole demo, but the lyrics usually come out of our jam sessions. Matt- Yea, we pretty much just start jamming and trim the fat as we go along. By the end of the song, we try to round it out, but Paul is definitely the main writer as far as the final project goes. Jason Do you guys work the instrumentals off the lyrics? Which part do you come up with one first? The Fearless Frank- The way I write, the words typically come first. But sometimes we’ll just come up with a riff, then go home and write the lyrics. Those are probably the best songs we come up with. Once in a while we’ll strike it gold and have it all at once. But you know, when it comes out, we all get writing credits because we all worked hard to get to here. [caption id="attachment_4081" align="alignnone" width="640"]The Fearless The Fearless[/caption] Jason Cool man, I definitely agree. Aright, so just the last question. You guys have a show coming up at the Bitter End, this Saturday, February 2nd. What’s that gonna be like and where can your fans find you online? The Fearless Yep, the show is going to be at the Bitter End in Manhattan. Definitely come down. It’s gonna be a great time. We go on at 10 PM, but come early if you can.
