PepsiCo announced on Friday that are cutting ties with rapper Lil Wayne due to his Emmet Till reference in Future’s “Karate Chop Remix” according to the Associated Press.
Although Wayne issued an apology, public pressure, especially from Till’s surviving family, forced the company to drop the Young Money boss. They were also sponsoring his summer tour with T.I. and French Montana.
Together, Wayne and Mountain Dew created the DEWeezy campaign, although that seems to be coming to an end.
PepsiCo released a statement saying that Wayne’s “offensive reference to a revered civil rights icon does not reflect the values of our brand.”
Wayne’s publicist, Sarah Cunningham, said it was an “amicable” parting and released no further information.
